Location

Just the sound of the “Lost Village” stirs the imagination, set in the pine glad foothills of the Almijara and Tejeda Natural Park, the village can be found just 15 minutes by car above the beautiful, whitewashed village of Frigiliana. The park is immense comprising over 400 square kilometres of mountains, well-marked walks and waterfalls not to mention the wildlife, a photographer’s paradise. Acebuchal is best described as a hamlet rather than a village and is close to the border of the neighbouring municipality of Cómpeta at some 700m above sea level. A trip to Acebuchal is a must and can be accessed without needing a 4x4 vehicle and is probably an hour and a half’s walk from Frigiliana with good parking close to the small, recently consecrated, church.

History

The history of Acebuchal originally dates back to the 17th century when it was used as a staging post by muleteers en route between Granada and Málaga cities. The hamlet was also used as a ‘refuge’ for fleeing Republicans who sought safety in the higher mountain range of the park during the Spanish Civil war. Frigiliana’s inhabitants experienced repression and intimidation from both the Nationalists and the Republicans. In the late 1940s, the 200 or so inhabitants of the village were ordered by the authorities to leave their homes as they suspected the hamlet was being unduly sympathetic to the Republican’s cause. It was not until the late 1990s that a family headed by Antonio nicknamed ‘El Zumbo‘ who used to live in the hamlet started to restore the infrastructure of the hamlet into what is now a truly unique collection of sympathetically restored whitewashed cottages, quite a task given that there was no running water or electricity until the early 2000s.

Restaurant

The focal point of the hamlet is, without doubt, the restaurant which has earned itself an outstanding reputation offering a really unique ‘country style’ menu boasting dishes like wild boar, lamb, venison and salads to die for. Their tasty homemade bread with olive oil is a meal in itself! There is also a shop selling a wide range of locally produced and organically grown products.
