Formalities & documentation
Civil and religious marriages can be celebrated in Spain
for people over 18. While Spanish law appears to permit
foreigners to marry in Spain, in practice it will usually be
necessary for one of the couple to have been legally resident in
Spain for at least two years.
An application for marriage in Spain will usually involve lengthy
and time-consuming paperwork, and applicants should
therefore allow plenty of time.
Roman Catholic Marriages
These are a matter for the local Archbishop in the area of the
forthcoming marriage and, in general, a baptism certificate
and a statutory declaration by the parents of the English party to
the effect that their son / daughter is single, is required. Formalities
do, however, vary significantly from parish to parish and the
requirements should be checked well in advance with the local
priest.
Civil Marriages
Formalities may vary and applicants should check which
precise documents are needed. In general you need the
following documentation.
A notice of intention to marry is displayed on a Consular notice
board for 21 days. The notice itself is sworn by the applicant and
can only be accepted if he / she has been residing for a 21 day
period in the area where the notice is displayed.
Where one of the parties to the forthcoming marriage is
resident in the UK and will be coming to Spain for the marriage
ceremony they should approach the nearest Spanish Consulate
in the UK for full information.
If proof of UK residence is needed, a letter can be obtained
from the local Electoral Registration Office.
All documents that are in English have to have the Hague
Apostille on them. You can find further information on this subject
on www.fco.gov.uk/legislation.
The current fee for the Apostille is £ 19.00 for each document. If
you go there in person this process takes about 2 days. If you
send the documents by post it takes about 2 weeks and you
need to send an extra £ 2.00 for postage and packing.
All documents must then be translated into Spanish and
presented at the relevant town hall at least 3 months before the
planned wedding.
It is important to bear in mind that paperwork can be lengthy
and time consuming and forward planning is imperative,
especially when you're getting married in the summer.
The British Consulate in Málaga covers the Autonomous
Region of Andalusía, and the Spanish Autonomous cities of
Ceuta and Melilla in the North of Africa.

Christian & Kate were married
on September 20th Wedding in Frigiliana
Nov '08 edition
The forecast had been rain for their wedding
day but thankfully it was a clear blue sky and
stayed that way all day.
" Our ceremony was at 3pm. We had arranged for
our guests to meet at the Toboso Hotel terrace for
drinks before getting the coach to Frigilana for the
ceremony. "
"
After the ceremony we had sangría in the square
opposite the church. The coach took our guests
back to Nerja whilst we stayed on in Frigiliana to have
pictures taken.
They arrived in Casa Luque just after 6pm for drinks
and canapés and all the guests were taken aback with
the fantastic views from the terrace. "
" We had a truly fantastic day and so did all our
guests. Everything was perfect; it was everything that
we wanted ! The only negative thing about our day was
that it all went too quickly ! The whole experience was
fantastic; the whole build-up and being able to enjoy
the holiday with our family and friends who had made
the effort to share our day with us made the wedding
feel like it lasted a lot longer than just one day !”

Rain was predicted for the big day, which would
have moved the ceremony indoors. But like its
people, Gibraltar's weather proved sunny and warm.
" When we entered the garden for our ceremony, it
was as if we had entered a magical world where elves
tended lush plants, exotic reptiles, and ponds of golden
fi sh. We felt privileged to exchange our vows in such an
exquisite setting. After the ceremony, we wandered the charming
streets and then took a cable car to the top of the Rock
to visit the Barbary Apes, take in the ocean air, and gaze
across the sparkling Mediterranean to Africa. "
"
Along the
way, Gibraltarians stopped not only to congratulate us
but also to snap our photo, as if we were movie stars ! Our time in Gibraltar was too short. The next day we
took a tour of the glittering Costa Del Sol. At the airport
in Málaga, we boarded a plane to our honeymoon
in Marrakech. The sights and sounds of Gibraltar had
animated the iconic image of the Rock. But even more
vividly, the people of this region had welcomed us,
witnessed our vows, celebrated with us, and sent us on
our way with a bid to return one day. And we will. ”

Wedding in Nerja
July '08 edition
Loren and Nicky started their day getting
ready at The Hotel Carabeo, Nerja.
Nicky's favourite part of the day was walking to
the church with her father. " We had a special moment
with each other and it was great to see everyone
congratulating me and clapping as we approached
the church. The ceremony went by in a bit of a daze. I
remember walking out of the church breathing a
sigh of relief that the formalities were over and the
celebrations could begin.”
The reception was held at The Hotel Toboso & the
speeches were one of the most memorable parts of
the day.
“ The only time I cried during the whole day was
during the speeches. We had quite a few tender
moments and of course some funny ones too. I have such wonderful memories, not just of my
wedding day but also of a whole week with friends,
family, and plenty of joy and laughter. "
"
It was wonderful
and I'd recommend getting married abroad,
especially here in Nerja. "

on August 4th Wedding in Frigiliana
Sept '08 edition
The happy couple got married up in Frigiliana
Church at 1p.m. and the reception was held at
The Hotel Toboso, Nerja.
Darren recalls, " It was an action-packed day. What
pleased most of the guests was how well everything
flowed. We would not have changed anything. A
perfect day had by all. My family and Nicola's were delighted with how
the wedding went. I must say that a wedding abroad
is so different from having one back at home. "
" Having
friends and family on holiday all together is great
and it's just so much more relaxed, and the whole
wedding experience lasts longer. The best thing
was that we could share the next few days after
the wedding with our friends and family on holiday. "
"
It wouldn’t have happened like that if we had got
married back at home. Also if we had decided to get
married back at home we would probably have had
to pay nearly twice the cost. To sum it all up, it ended
up being the fairytale wedding that any girl would wish
for and the memories we have of the whole day will
truly last forever. "

The reception was held at the Hotel Albayzín Del
Mar in Almuñécar.
They were surrounded by beautifully
landscaped gardens, pools and fountains. Two
Spanish guitars entertained their guests at the pre-reception
drinks and canapés. We were then entertained by the band ‘The Mighty
Pimps’, who were great and got the crowd into form
for a great evening.
It is hard to put into words what a fantastic time we
had. We could never have arranged such a wedding
in Ireland. We were so lucky and blessed that our
family and friends were willing to travel and enjoy our
day with us. "
Nerja will always hold a special place in our hearts
and we will be back to celebrate an anniversary or
two in the future."
