Nerja
They say once you have visited Nerja you will always return ! Situated 45 kilometres east of Malaga, the opposite direction to where most of the masses head - thank goodness! Geographically a unique location where the best climate in Europe can be enjoyed. Nerja is where the Costa del Sol gives way to the breathtaking scenery of the Costa Tropical where the pine clad coast line meets rocky coves and bays. Increasingly better motorway connections make the journey time to Granada airport within 90 mins while Malaga airport is only 45 mins.
The town has managed to retain its Spanish charm with no high rise developments. Nerja really offers everything that Spain has to offer from a choice of 9 beautiful beaches, a great choice of water sports, sightseeing tours, excursions ( including Morocco ) to the old quarter with its whitewashed narrow cobbled streets. Remember that Nerja is home to one of Spain's most important tourist attractions - The Nerja Caves officially recognised as an historical and artistic monument, are one of the most important Prehistoric archaeological sites on the western Mediterranean. Dating back some five million years, they are notable for the large chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites, and the immense length, over 4,000 metres.
Uniquely Nerja has become one of the most favourite places in Andalucia to get married. Probably as a consequence of the beautiful church at the base of the Balcon de Europe, a palm tree lined promontory stretching into the med, not to mention the most beautiful surrounding scenery to enjoy a romantic honeymoon.
Spain would not be Spain without the Siestas and Fiestas and Nerja is no exception ! Not a month goes by where there isn't some kind of public holidays or " ferias ". There are 8 National fiestas planned in 2009, Jan 1, Apr 10, Apr 13, May 4, May 25, Aug 31, 25 & 26 Dec as well as many more local holidays.
The beauty of Nerja is that is never closes, a bustling little town with some 25,000 inhabitants in the winter and over 3 times as many in the summer. Due to a high mix of nationalities living here, the choice of restaurants is wide and varied. The old part of town, ( the real Spain ) with its cobbled streets, offers a great choice of tapas bars and fish restaurants. The town becomes alive at night, and a walk along the Balcon de Europa is highly recommended, to see the artists , street entertainers and musicians strut their stuff !
Remember what the locals say " Once you have been to Nerja, you will always return !"
