Maro
Maro, is a picturesque and charming village approximately 3 kilometres to the east of Nerja. The journey time to Nerja is 45 mins by car. The " Balcon de Maro " is a beautiful location to watch the morning sun rise over La Herradura. Maro is arguably the first resort of the Costa Tropical heading east towards Almuñecar. Relatively few visitors enjoy the countryside around Maro or it's secluded beach. The architecture and the " look and feel " of the whitewashed town is simple and pretty with an abundance of balconies with cascading flowers.
There are a number interesting attractions within walking distance of the village, the most popular of which is the famous Nerja Caves, discovered by a group of local boys in 1959 when they were hunting bats. The Caves are one of Spain's most popular attractions. A short stroll from the centre of the village is the famous " Aguila " Aguaduct built in 1880 to ensure a regular water supply to the sugar factory the other side of what is now the motorway slip road, the remains of which can be clearly seen today. To conclude Maro has a population of just under 1,000 and as such conveys an atmosphere of what Maro is, a tranquil, pretty Andalucian seaside village.
